Toshiba at CES 2009 Preview

Despite the global economic downturn, by all accounts it’s business as usual in the technology world as Thursday sees the opening day of the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2009 in Las Vegas.

While the only official Toshiba launch predicted for opening day is the 512GB SSD drive we covered in December, there’s sure to be plenty of surprises and impressive, geeky stuff to mull over.

“Toshiba or HP? Going mad trying to decide”

Aren’t choices brilliant? Especially when you win either way and that’s the case with Waynester over at Digital Spy. Torn between buying a Toshiba A300-10M or an HP G70-111EM like his sister got for Christmas, he’s asked the netizens of the aforementioned community for their thoughts on the matter.

While the Toshiba has the smaller screen at 15.1″, dslrocks suggests that this may be the way to go unless “you’re looking for something which won’t need a small suitcase to carry around” as would be the case with the 17″ display on the HP and as a Toshiba Satellite owner himself “can’t fault it”.

Subversive has also done some homework on Waynester’s behalf and recommends the Toshiba. He likes the specs and suggests that if it’s anything like his friends machine will be “really good, build quality is excellent”. He also agrees on the question of screensize stating that the Toshiba “will be big, but not big enough so that you can’t take it with you” He also points out that the “Toshiba has 4 USB ports, the HP has 3. I can’t see a built in Webcam on the HP, but the Toshiba has one” and concludes that that “the Toshiba just looks so good”.

Geekanoids takes a good look at the Toshiba Satellite X200 - review

Staunch Mac fan, and a man who confesses that “a few years back, anything outside the Apple platform would not even be allowed in my house or office” – geekanoids have now happily mellowed, and were keen to take the Toshiba Satellite X200 on trial.

Giving it a good month or so of their time, and generating a really interesting review of their thoughts, which can be found over here, they seem generally delighted. “I was very impressed by the screen real estate” they say, as well as mentioning “the trackpad [which] also impressed me with its smooth tracking”.

So, in conclusion, geekanoids was delighted. “The X200 is a nice bit of kit and for someone who is a Windows Vista user, this could be a good desktop replacement choice. It has a nice powerful processor and would serve you well as a work or multimedia machine.”

For him though, there’s no miraculous change of fortune for now, and despite his positive feelings towards the Toshiba, he “will stick with his MacBook Pro”.

Toshiba NB100 and Satellite A300 make the accountingweb list

“As we reported in August, 2008 lived up to predictions as a vintage year for laptops” say accountingweb.co.uk, and how right they are. After recently spoiling us with a list of their top 10 printers, they have scoured a number of sources and put together a similar list for laptop computers - detailing the ‘must-see’ models of the Christmas period, and beyond… And would you believe, two Toshibas have made it into their sights.

First up is the Toshiba NB100 – “Another 9-in Atom-powered model, with 1GB of RAM, a 120GB disk drive (not solid state like the other two models mentioned) and built-in WiFi for around £300”, which, despite being described as looking “old fashioned” by one reviewer, is nevertheless described as “pretty much a standard spec netbook” by accountingweb.

However, as far as value goes, the Toshiba Satellite A300 seems to be particularly positive. “Traditionally a dependable name for laptops” they say of Toshiba, they are particularly keen on price. After all, “performance may not match the other mid-range machines here, but with a street price of £300, who’s complaining?”

Who indeed…

Toshiba debuts first 512GB SDD for laptops

The news that Toshiba has just announced the world’s first half-terabyte SSD is creating something of stir among the tech forums and blogs of Social Media.

Toshiba 512GB SSD

Developed for both notebooks and desktops, the AES encryptable drive uses MLC (multi-level cell) technology that according to MacUser “enables the storage of more data than single-level cell NAND (Notand)”. Toshiba state that “the MLC controller not only facilitates the read/write speeds, it also allows for parallel data transfers and wear levelling to optimise performance, reliability and endurance” which is good news for those of us who miss the extra access speeds of traditional HDDs.

While initial costs of the new drives are likely to be at a premium, this discussion over on Nexus hopes that once they become mainstream, the price will drop accordingly.
